A 16-room inclusive hotel among the oaks · Laukariz, Mungia, Basque Country · Opening January 2028
Bakearen Txokoa means “the corner of peace” in Basque; Haritzen Artean, “among oaks”. It sits in Laukariz, five minutes from Mungia and twenty from Bilbao airport, on an estate of mature oaks where the grass is mown and the silence can be heard.
It is a hotel for everyone: couples, families, people travelling for work, wheelchair users, blind and partially sighted guests, deaf guests, people with intellectual disabilities. There is no “accessible wing”: the whole hotel is built so that nobody has to ask for help.

Every measurement was decided on the drawing, not on site. That is why the accessibility is invisible: it is everywhere.
3,300 m² of mature oaks on mown grass. The hotel is small on purpose: sixteen rooms and silence.
We publish widths, heights, turning circles and gradients. What we say can be measured.

Among the oaks, five minutes from Mungia and twenty from the airport.
There is no “accessible wing”. The whole hotel is built so that nobody has to ask for help. This is what you will find, however you travel.
Nine rooms with a 1.80 m turning circle in bedroom and bathroom, level shower with seat, transfer hoist, pool hoist, 2 m paths without a single lip and a van with a ramp.
Braille and tactile signage on every door and headboard, tactile paving, high contrast, breakfast menu in Braille, guide dogs welcome and a website that reads well with screen readers.
Visual doorbell and alarm alerts in the room, induction loops at reception and in the pavilion, staff with basic sign language and sound therapy you can feel through the body.
Pictograms, easy-read, clear routines, quiet spaces without noise, therapeutic painting and yoga with trained professionals. And time: nobody is in a hurry here.
Lift, benches every fifty metres in the woods, beds at 50 cm, showers with seats and a salt-water spa that takes the weight off your joints.
While some paint or do yoga, others rest in the spa. Carers need to stop too: here they can.
Silence, a terrace onto the oaks, breakfast with no set time and the spa in a private session for two.
A desk, fibre, coffee until eleven and a forest for when you close the laptop. Seven nights or more, 20 % off.
A calm walk through the hotel: arrival, rooms, bathroom, the Path of Silence, the experiences and the spa. With subtitles and a transcript.
Narrated in Spanish. Subtitles in the language of this page.
Let’s think about this for a moment. What if rest, real rest, the kind that resets you, were within everyone’s reach? No buts.
That is what this is about. Bakearen Txokoa, which in Basque literally means the corner of peace. A small country hotel in the middle of an oak wood in Laukariz, Mungia, ten minutes from Bilbao airport.
And here is the important part: it is not a hotel adapted afterwards. It was born this way, designed from minute zero for people with disabilities and their families. Its motto says it all: rest, for everyone. And mind you, this is not a marketing slogan. It is the foundation of everything: every brick, every activity, every decision.
Let’s start where the journey starts. Because for many families the hard part is not the destination, it is everything you have to organise to get there. Well: the hotel’s adapted van picks you up at the airport for free and drops you at the door.
And when you want to go down to Mungia, to the health centre, the shops or for a drink, it takes you too. No depending on public transport. This is real inclusion: everything easy from second one, even before you set foot in the hotel.
And another detail that changes a lot: the hotel has transfer hoists and shower chairs for anyone who needs them. No need to bring everything from home. It is here, ready.
Level reception, 1.80 m corridors, a lift and not a single step anywhere on the estate. You come in and move around without thinking about it.
Sixteen rooms, thirty-two guests. Few, on purpose. A wheelchair can turn in every one, and nine are truly accessible, with the 1.80 m turning circle in bedroom and bathroom required by the Basque regulations, the strictest there are.
And the bathrooms, which I love: here accessibility becomes invisible. Level shower, rails that are part of the design, a seat that folds away and is barely seen. A beautiful bathroom, nothing like a hospital, for anyone.
And the garden rooms open wide: the forest comes inside. You close the door and all you have in front of you are oaks.
Now let’s go outside. The Path of Silence runs through the whole oak wood: a metre and a half wide, continuous surface, not a single lip. Whether you are in a wheelchair, on crutches or pushing a pram: the entire forest is yours. And there is a dream behind it: that one day this path will reach all the way to Mungia.
But Bakearen Txokoa is not just walls and design. The real magic is in what you live here. Therapeutic painting, in a timber space with natural light, designed for people with intellectual disabilities and autism: a place without hurry to express yourself in colour.
Adapted yoga for every body, from the chair too. Meditation beneath a hundred-year-old oak.
Sound therapy with the murmur of the waterfall in the background. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
And then there is the wishing tree, one of the oldest oaks in the wood, with its timber letterbox at a height anyone can reach. It seems a small thing, but it creates a lovely bond with the place.
And if there was any doubt left, the spa. A therapeutic salt-water pool, gentler on skin and joints, with a hoist into the water. Sauna, massage room. Everything, absolutely everything, to be enjoyed one hundred per cent without having to ask for help. And not only for those with a disability: also for those who accompany and care for them every day, who need to stop too.
That is the idea for families. While some paint or do yoga, others rest in the spa or go for a walk. And when you feel like it, you share it all. Nobody has to worry about anything.
And for associations, a nearby destination for day trips and group stays, with the van, the hoists and the whole team ready from the first minute.
In the end, after seeing all this, a question hangs in the air. Because Bakearen Txokoa is more than a hotel: it is a model. What if this level of inclusion, good taste and respect for the environment were not the exception, but the norm?
Bakearen Txokoa. Rest, for everyone. We would love to build it with you.
This is the whole journey. Every step is designed to be done alone, if that is what you want.
The adapted van collects you free of charge at Bilbao airport and drops you at the door. Two 3.50 m parking bays if you bring your own car.

1.20 m automatic door, reception desk at 80 cm with induction loop, 1.80 m corridors, lift with voice and Braille.

Your room has a name, a phrase on the headboard and a Braille plaque. 1.80 m bed, open step-free bathroom, terrace or balcony onto the oaks.

Level shower with fold-down seat and rails that are part of the design. Shower chair and hoist available free. A beautiful bathroom that doesn’t look like a hospital.

Therapeutic salt-water pool at 33 °C with hoist, dry sauna, Turkish steam bath with menthol and heated stone loungers.

The Path of Silence runs through the whole oak wood: 2 m wide, continuous surface, benches and warm-light bollards. The entire forest is yours.

In the glass pavilion, facing the oaks, with bread baked that morning and local produce. And tomorrow, again.

You close the door and all you have in front of you are oaks.
